                This continuing series of measurements, one of the most sophisticated market planning tools available anywhere, was able to definitively document:

                                - airline competitive ratings, by route, aircraft type, and passenger type;

                                - future airline selection determinants and preferences; and

                                - industry patterns of passenger demographics, attitudes and reactions to proposed concepts.

                Results were widely used for major service planning decisions and advertising/marketing campaigns (e.g. elimination of poor-quality three-classes-of-service product, identification of 747/L1011 "most-preferred" status for major ad campaign, need for concerted campaign to upgrade/retrain flight attendants).

                Continuing Internal Service Performance

                                and Traffic Composition Measurement

                This ongoing program, based on more than 100,000 in-flight survey responses annually, provided a complete, flexible, and readily-accessible computerized data base for addressing the full range of airline concerns, including:

                                - changes and trends in airline service delivery;

                                - changes and trends in market segmentation/composition;

                                - consumer reactions to a wide variety of concepts and product offerings; and

                                - changes and trends in fare utilization, diversion, and generation.

                Results were used continuously for product design (interiors, meal service), advertising allocation, and pricing.

                Airline System Intra- and Interline Traffic Flow Report

                This ongoing data analysis, based on then-existing CAB Origin and Destination input, gave a complete picture of the sources and destinations of traffic on any route, including:

                                - a breakdown by local, intraline connecting, and interline connecting flows;

                                - absolute traffic totals, and by carrier and city of origin/destination; and

                                - a detailing of all other significant flow patterns for the traffic over competing routes.

                Results were used for identifying competitive flow patterns that could be addressed by schedule changes and/or promotional programs.

                Competitive Advertising Performance

                This continuing series tracked competitive advertising and recall, airline use and preference, and detailed competitive imagery among relevant consumer groups in major U.S. cities, and in London, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, and Milan. Results were widely used for advertising and promotional planning.

                o Analysis of various fare and pricing proposals, supporting or negating suggested options.

                o Incremental revenue impact of the Getaway Card, resulting in renewed marketing effort and precluding a decision to discontinue the card.

                o Composition of the Telemail/tickets-by-mail market, identifying the extent of airline/travel agent sales diversion to this method of distribution, and pinpointing key consumer perceptions and problems.

                o Consumer reaction to automated ticketing machine alternatives, both in prototype and in actual test market use, identifying problems relative to their actual operation, and pinpointing the market segments most likely to be influenced by extension of the concept.

                o Travel agent reaction to the "net-fare" concept, resulting in a decision to postpone introduction.

                o Travel agent/travel manager perceptions of airline service and sales policies and competitive standings, used for continual measurement of the airline's standing with its principal distribution channels.

                o Determination of the profile of the Florida traveller, resulting in timely inputs to marketing programs when service was introduced into this market.

                o Comparative analyses of meal programs, resulting in selection of the preferred alternatives (numerous applications).

                o Parking alternatives at Kansas City International Airport.

                o Impact of three-classes-of-service on trans-Atlantic airline selection.

                o Impact of coupon programs on airline selection.

                o Market segmentation studies, using both routinely- and specially-obtained data, to identify appropriate characteristics for marketing program development, among female business travellers, nationals of six major European markets, vacation travellers, and others.

                o Product design and delivery surveys, to measure customer reaction to diverse elements of the airline's product, including airport check-in, on-time departure, slim-line seating, in-flight entertainment, and lost luggage.

                o Analysis of airline flights and passenger traffic to and within the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean; implementation of recommendations resulted in flight rerouting at considerable cost savings.
